NAVIGATING THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

Attempting to understand & uncomplicate the maze of patch-worked systems and programs we call Healthcare.

The US Healthcare System has failed us.

The medical healthcare system is an abyss of process, follow ups, billing questions, and “missing information” that requires a PH.D to navigate with any level of skill and effectiveness.

Just in the first 6 months of my chronic illness management alone, I have seen 6 doctors, at 4 separate hospitals, received 17 separate bills, been mis-billed 9 times, made 36 phone calls (Dr’s, providers, insurance, etc), and had to reschedule my appointments due to “system errors” 5 times.

Most days I feel taken advantage of and ignored as I attempt to self-advocate through the fragmented and muddy flow of the healthcare system.

Balancing all of the intricacies is quickly becoming an art form that even Picasso could respect. My only hope is to unpack the balance, processes, best practices, and establish a trusted comfort level in ones own ability to manage their health & wealth without requiring a miracle or a PHD.

SELECTING A DOCTOR

How to select a provider / hospital and doctor that is right for you.

Is that person right for you? Are they on the same page as you? Do you feel a personal connection? Is it necessary to LIKE the person who is treating you? What if you don’t care about the partnership piece?

SCHEDULING

Scheduling urgent apt’s or long-term visits. How to prioritize your schedule and get into their tight schedules effectively.

MEDICAL RECORDS

Keep your friends close, and your medical records closer. How to be in control and avoid the gaps in your records if moving across town or across the country to new physicians.

INSURANCE COVERAGE

Ensuring that you’re insured throughout the process. Avoiding the pit-falls of an out-of-network pit fall or transitioning doctors.

BILL TRACKING

Bills. Bills. Bills.

How much do I owe? Who do I owe? Didn’t I pay that already? Why are their 3 bills for one appointment? I thought I met my deductible already? Wasn’t this a co-pay only appointment? Are they really charging me for water?

SELF-ADVOCATING

Holding yourself and others accountable for your progress and needs. Making sure that you’re a priority to the teams treating you and those billing you. Your comfort, trust, and needs have to come first, but may require respectful force. The people treating you should know you as a WHOLE-INDIVIDUAL-HUMAN, not as a chart # in a list of billing codes and tasks.
